L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program

The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is an exciting free program available to 16-20 year olds living in the Colac Otway Shire who are facing significant barriers in gaining the 120 hours of driving experience needed to take the probationary licence test.

The L2P assists learners under 21 years of age, who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.

Young people are matched with fully licensed volunteer mentors and have access to use a sponsored vehicle to gain supervised driving experience. L2P is free for eligible young people and is funded by the Victorian Government Transport Accident Commission and local community businesses, organisations and sporting clubs who sponsor the program.

The program does not substitute for professional driving lessons, and L2P does not pay for the probationary driving test itself.

Learner drivers accepted into the L2P program have access to lessons with a professional driving instructor before they start driving with a L2P mentor and during their time with L2P if needed.

L2P Mentors

Colac Otway L2P is currently seeking volunteers to supervise learner drivers. Here is your opportunity to contribute to a safer community by mentoring local young people who really need your support. All new volunteers complete VicRoads developed training to learn how to supervise learner drivers in the L2P program.

To become an L2P volunteer you need:

  • a full Victorian drivers licence
  • a working with children check
  • a Police check
  • a licence check
  • a willingness to work with young people
  • to commit to at least one hour per week (flexible)
  • to complete L2P volunteer mentor training

All back ground checks, training and insurances are covered by the program.

All mentor applicants will be interviewed by the program coordinator to be assessed for suitability.
